SMALL, 100 CALORIE STEPS CAN ADD UP BIG TIME
Any of these ideas can help you
eat 100 fewer calories a day:
w
Drink 2 cups of fat-free milk rather than 2 cups of
whole milk.
w
Order your sandwich or burger without cheese.
w
Instead of a regular- or king-size chocolate bar, enjoy a
fun-size one.
w
Order an 8-ounce diet soda instead of a regular soda.
Each of these activities
can burn 100 calories:
w
Pedal an exercise bike for 13 minutes.
w
Walk briskly for 22 minutes.
w
Swim some laps at the pool for 10 minutes.
w
Clean the house (or the windows) for 25 minutes.
w
Shovel snow for 14 minutes.
w
Go skiing or snowshoeing for 10 minutes.
SOMETIMES
100 sounds like a lot—sometimes not.
One hundred dollars is a fair amount of cash. One hundred
pennies? Not so much. Winning a basketball game by 100 is
a rout. Winning on
Jeopardy!
by 100 is a close call.
What about 100 calories? Well, it’s a number that is both
big and small. It’s big enough to make a difference in your
weight but small enough that you’ll hardly miss it.
Expanding waistlines.
The number of overweight
Americans has been climbing for decades. It’s a complex
issue, but the simplest explanation is that we take in more
calories than we burn. Some researchers put the average
American’s imbalance of intake and output at 100 calories
a day. Eliminate this extra 100 calories, and many of us
wouldn’t gain weight.
To trim that extra 100, consider these tips based on
estimates for a 150-pound person. Results will vary
depending on weight, body composition and level of
intensity.
