Ladies, start your engines
Kent Olson, president of Olson Tire and Auto Service in Wausau, is returning to
Healthy Women, Healthy Lives to present his workshop called “The Girls’ Guide to
a Happy Car.” Olson’s popular workshop will cover a number of topics related to car
maintenance that resonate with our own health too.
“Maintaining your car is akin to taking care of yourself,” Olson said. “People ignore
their check engine lights all the time, but you wouldn’t ignore your body’s check engine
light if you had one.”
“Vehicle engines and systems have become much more sophisticated over the years,
and the check engine light can indicate a small problem that could turn into a bigger,
more expensive problem if ignored,” he said. “Would you ignore chest pain?”
He says the check engine light is a natural tie-in to relating car maintenance to health.
The light is the car’s way of telling you there’s something wrong. The same can be said
for many health-related symptoms—except when it comes to our health, the cost of
waiting too long for service could be much greater.
Sue Oelke
SUE OELKE
and her friends attended
the inaugural Healthy Women, Healthy
Lives retreat offered by Aspirus Women’s
Health, and they’ve been hooked ever since.
“One of us saw some literature on the
event and thought it would be fun to go,
and now we make sure it’s one of those
things we do every year,” said Oelke, a
Marathon, Wis., resident. “I was so impressed after attending
the retreat the first time that I switched doctors because I knew
that Aspirus is where I wanted to get my health care.”
On Feb. 18, women can join Oelke and her friends at the
seventh annual Healthy Women, Healthy Lives at Jefferson
Street Inn in Wausau. The women’s retreat is an opportunity
for women to get information and tips about maintaining
all aspects of their health through a series of workshops on a
variety of different topics.
This year’s retreat once again offers numerous speakers,
activities and workshops for attendees to choose from. After
dinner, featured speaker Barbara Burclaff, YWCA Women’s
Empowerment Program director, will discuss how to draw your
identity from the inside out using the three P’s—passion, power
and purpose.
“You always walk away with so much information, and it’s
always interesting to see what classes there will be,” Oelke said.
“It’s the education that keeps me coming back.”
